We’re launching a new course titled “Speckling Binaries,” exploring how to resolve close binary stars using speckle interferometry.
Whether you’re experienced or new to this technique, we’ll guide you through the process of imaging and analyzing binary orbits, with practical applications for amateur astronomers.
Observations will be made remotely at BARO at TDS. Your results as shown here can become published science and even replace professionally developed orbital models reported by the US Naval Observatory.
The seminar takes place in June and July.
As a special highlight, the course includes an optional supplement called BEAR: a hands-on 2-night observing experience at Mount Wilson Observatory this July. Participants will work with historical telescopes and see binary systems in action as in the photos below.
For more information and to sign up, visit the Seminars page. The seminar is appropriate for participants from 14 to 75+. Sign up before May 24, 2026.
Timeline:
- Classes will start on 6/4/2026 and end on 8/5/2026 with weekly evening meetings
- For those who do the BEAR supplement, they will be at MWO on the night of 7/8/2026 and 7/9/2026
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to deepen your observing skills and do real science.
